Science

About the Department

At Redden Court School we have nine experienced science teachers who are able to teach all three Science disciplines, Biology, Chemistry and Physics up to GCSE. We are fortunate enough to have 6 brand new science labs which are all fully equipped with new science apparatus.

Science provides us with a logical, factual and rational explanation of the world around us. Everything we know about the universe, from how trees reproduce to what an atom is made up of, is the result of scientific research and experiment. We as a faculty are determined to bring enthusiasm and passion to the young minds at Redden Court School.

What will your child learn in year seven?

Practical science activities have huge significance in the learning process. They engage students, helping them to develop important skills, understand the process of scientific investigation and develop a broad understanding of scientific concepts. Therefore, at Redden Court School, all students begin with an ‘Introduction to Science’ topic, this allows students to use key apparatus such as bunsen burners and microscopes.

We have split our topics into 10 big ‘Scientific Ideas’ that build on the knowledge they have from primary school but are also a stepping stone to access the KS4 curriculum. The first topic builds on their biological understanding with a topic called  ‘Cells, Tissues, Organs and Organ Systems’ followed by the basic building block of Chemistry, ‘Particles’. We have introduced required practicals at KS3 to mirror those as KS4.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

Extracurricular opportunities are pivotal in Science, we find that students want to, not only be passionate about the subject in class but also outside the classroom.

We offer a weekly science club, this allows our pupils to explore activities that really excite and engage them, through good practical work and contexts. Our practicals include, making balloon rockets, elephant toothpaste, plastic, bath bombs and even making snot! We offer a wide range of Science interhouse competitions across the topics in KS3.

We also like to give opportunities to our students which not only will allow them to progress outside of the classroom but also appreciate the wider opportunities the subject can offer them later on in life so that they can make a difference to society. These opportunities include the ‘Faraday Challenge’, ‘STEM Competitions at Havering 6th Form’, ‘GCSE Science Live’ where Students get to listen to Scientists such as Professor Robert Winston and a Space ‘Virtual Reality’ Workshop.

What ambassador opportunities are available to your child?

We have recently introduced the concept of Science Ambassadors in our subject. We are very excited to introduce this to our current Year 7 who have joined us at Redden Court School.  To be considered for the Ambassador role, regular attendance at Science Club is required. The ambassador programme will consist of a team of approximately ten students across Year 7 and 8 and 9. The students who are selected to become Science Ambassadors must show a commitment and passion towards Science and take on the responsibility to not only raise the profile of Science across the school but ensure their peers share the same enthusiasm as they do.

The Science Ambassador will take part in a number of roles such as:
