Design & Technology

About the Department

The Design & Technology Department at Redden Court School is a really engaging and vibrant place which is always a hive of activity. We have two very well equipped workshops with all of the latest resources including 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machinery and a CAD suite where students can produce 2D and 3D design work using programmes such as 2D Design and Photoshop. We run a STEM club where students can apply mathematical and scientific knowledge and put them into practical applications. Our department is ever evolving and we embrace new ideas keeping our projects up to date and engaging. Design and Technology is always a popular subject at both KS3 and GCSE level and we have a long track record of achieving good results from our students.

What will your child learn in year seven?

In Year 7 students learn about timber based materials and how to work with woods including how to form wood joints, where woods come from and about how to apply a finish to a product. We introduce students to CAD/CAM and students learn to design on a computer using 2D design as well as how to produce a physical product using the laser cutter and through this they will learn about the advantages and disadvantages of using CAD. Our Year 7 students will also begin to explore design influences and will research into famous designers and design movements in order to bring more creativity into their practical work.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

We run a STEM club which allows students to take part in fun and engaging practical projects whilst learning about Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Each year we take our STEM students to competitions to compete against other schools in the borough and if successful here they can progress onto national competitions. The Design and Technology department are heavily involved in producing initiatives, projects and signage around the school and our top students have the chance to become Technology ambassadors and these students can be a part of producing things which will be used in real life scenarios around the school site. Examples include the 3D visual display hanging in the atrium for our new house system and the new recycle stations created for the new school refuse scheme.

What ambassador opportunities are available to your child?

We select Technology Ambassadors from each year group to represent our subject in a variety of ways including helping out at open evenings and assemblies, being part of our range of Technology clubs and also representing our subject at competitions. This is an exciting opportunity for our students and we love to give students the opportunity to showcase their practical skills beyond the classroom.
