Digital Faculty

About Computing

In Computing we aim to empower students to become articulate, knowledgeable, skilled and inquisitive learners. Students will keep ahead of the changes within society so they are prepared for the social and economic climate allowing them to participate in and contribute to the global world.

We impart our knowledge and skills in Computer Science and Digital literacy through the use of Computer systems, various software and hardware as well as using excellent online resources, which, in recent times has been used very effectively in delivering an uninterrupted virtual experience to students.

What will your child learn in year seven?

At the start of year seven your child will be introduced to the school network and their Chromebook. We will explore Google Drive along with the Google suite of software and Google classroom. The Autumn term will see the development of project based skills, in the form of creating a website on E-Safety, a topic which they will have studied all throughout primary school. In the spring term, we will go on to learn about Computer Systems and the use of Binary numbers in. Finally, the summer term will see us working diligently to further develop your child’s programming skills, using Scratch and BBC Microbits.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

As a department, we understand the need to keep up-to-date with the technology developments. We encourage eager students in assisting others by promoting them to digital ambassadors, which allows them to embed their knowledge by teaching less experienced students. Students are encouraged to explore the subject further by availing of various media platforms, such as tv programs, newspaper articles and video clips online. As a department we run a coding club, with the help of Y10 Computing Ambassadors, to allow students to practice the skills they have gained during lessons. Previous students have enjoyed this opportunity and it allowed them to make new friends and share ideas with others who have similar interests, as well as build their confidence.

What ambassador opportunities are available to your child?

We also offer opportunities for students to become ‘Technology Ambassadors’ and represent the faculty during school events. We also encourage students to act as a mentor to other students encouraging them to support and guide their fellow learners in the technology subjects.
