Geography

About the Department

The Geography Department consists of 5 experienced staff who are passionate about their subject. Our aim is to inspire students about the world around them and educate them to be well rounded, global citizens. We encourage students to learn about the world around them, to travel and to see the world, but also to understand their place in the world. Topics are taught and assessed in a range of ways to ensure students consider different viewpoints and understand the knock-on effects and layers of complexity in the world in which we live.

What will your child learn in year seven?

Students will begin by investigating ‘What is Geography?’ before undertaking a unit on 'Rivers' where students investigate the processes that lead to the changing profile of a river as it travels downstream and the features found along a rivers course.  Following this we move onto the human topic of ‘Urbanisation’ in which students examine the locations of settlements, the problems that occur within urban areas and the ways in which these can be solved or managed. We next move onto ecosystems in a topic entitled ‘Living World’; here we explore ecosystems with a focus on tropical rainforests. Our final topic of the year is ‘Weather and Climate’. Students will explore different types of weather and the challenges it presents. They will then look in detail at tropical storms and will finish the year by conducting a fieldwork enquiry looking at the microclimate of the school.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

Geography without fieldwork has been described as being like science without experiments and therefore we embed fieldwork throughout the curriculum which requires learning outside the classroom. This ranges from conducting a microclimate study around the school grounds in Year 7 to visiting Loughton Brook river to measure changes along the long profile in Year 9. We also take students in Year 10 to investigate the urban regeneration of Stratford. In addition we run overseas residential trips to Iceland and Sicily to see first hand the processes studied in class.

We run a weekly geography club where students can delve deeper into geographical issues, research and report on current geographical topics, and undertake geographical projects.
