About the Department

The MFL faculty is made of a mix of experienced and young teachers working as a team to share their passion for languages and their own culture. All of us are committed to broaden students’ understanding of different cultures and develop strong, long-lasting linguistic skills.

Languages play a very important role in the 21st century and are part of the Ebacc subjects that most students will have to study at GCSE level. We currently offer French as a foreign language with the ambition to offer an extra language in the near future. In Year 7 and 8, students have 6 lessons a fortnight and 5 lessons a fortnight in Year 9, 10 and 11.

What will your child learn in year seven?

Every student has a different experience of learning French in primary school so we start the year making sure basic vocabulary is understood by all of them. Their learning will be based around developing four skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking. In order to do so, we use a range of resources including interactive textbooks, online presentations, vocabulary mats, websites that students have their own login for, mini-whiteboards and DVDs.

By the end of Year 7, students will have a good foundation in French and will be able to read and listen to short paragraphs as well as expressing themselves both orally and written on a range of topics including describing themselves physically and mentally, school, hobbies, places in town and family.

Students in Year 7 will also have the opportunity to watch and study a French movie with English subtitles and will do so every year.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

We offer a range of clubs at KS3 and KS4. Year 7 students have the opportunity to join our Spanish club to discover a new language and culture. They can also join our very popular Spelling Bee club that the school competed at both local and national levels in previous years and won the competition. Spelling Bee increases students' literacy in French and in English. Towards the summer, students can also experience a French bowls initiation in a nearby park and we host an MFL challenge for Year 7 involving other schools in the borough.

Once a year the MFL faculty organises a 5 day residential trip to the North of France and Paris for KS4 students. They have the opportunity to discover real life experiences in a French market and a bakery. This helps them to develop their speaking and listening skills. Students also visit a range of famous French landmarks including the Eiffel Tower and the Sacre-Coeur basilica and we finally spend a day in Disneyland Paris.
