Performing Arts

About the Department

The Performing Arts department seeks to actively involve students in the exploration and enactment of human experience through the Music, Drama and Dance process. For this process to function, students have to work together in an imaginative and creative manner. We believe that this form of creative cooperation has an important role to play in personal and social development of students. Participation in the Performing Arts experience can lead to emergence of self-confidence, with an increasing awareness of oneself and the need of others through the exploration of dilemmas or conflicts derived from a range of stimuli. As confidence in the Performing Arts work develops, students should be able to initiate and invent dramatic situations and roles, respond spontaneously, accept the needs of the group as a whole, and develop an understanding of the contribution of the Arts in society.

At Redden Court we are fortunate to have fantastic facilities within the Performing Arts. We have two Performing Arts studios, a Music classroom with its own recording studio and four practice rooms for private instrumental or singing lessons.  At KS3 students study Performing Arts in year 7 & 8, which incorporates all three disciplines; Music, Drama and Dance. The majority of these lessons are practical to allow students to develop key performance skills, however elements of GCSE theory work is filtered down to provide students the opportunity to learn subject specific language, analyse and evaluate performances.

In Year 9, we prepare students to consider the subjects they would like to continue at GCSE and therefore students study Drama and Music before taking their options.

Redden Court Music Department offers many opportunities for students to develop their musical skill and ability, both inside and outside the classroom.

During lessons, students learn how to sing, play, listen, compose and sequence music through a curriculum, delivered through a ‘hands on approach’.  General Outcomes and Objectives of Music:

What will your child learn in year seven?

Students in Year 7 begin by exploring key skills and performance styles. They will develop an understanding of genre, characterisation, script work and how to devise original work. Students will also have the opportunity to use Performing Arts as a tool for social and moral exploration. Students will work independently and as a group in these lessons, allowing them to develop key intrapersonal and interpersonal skills. As well as exploring Performing Arts, students will be able to focus on developing their confidence and ability to work cooperatively with others.

How can learning progress beyond the classroom?

The Performing Arts department is committed to offering a variety of extracurricular activities and clubs for all Year 7 students to get involved with; including KS3 Drama club, Musical theatre club, Year 7 Music club, Step into Dance street dancing club and RCS Theatre company.  We run numerous Performing Arts events throughout the year which provide students with the chance to perform. This includes Christmas Concert, Summer Concert and a whole school production each academic year.

There are many opportunities to visit the local theatre or the West End of London, as well as welcome visiting companies to either perform or run workshops for students in school.

At GCSE, the students are provided the opportunity to travel to New York to progress and further extend their love for the subject.

Beyond the classroom, there are music clubs, concerts and trips, which give students insight into music within life, leisure and work, developing their knowledge, curiosity and confidence in a musical context.
